ASUS ROG Strix G16: four configurations compared

Two laptops advertised as a “ROG Strix G16” can differ in much more than graphics performance. These four configurations have different processors, memory capacities, storage and ports. Match the suffix before comparing offers.

The most useful starting point is the G615JMR-AS74 if you want to investigate an RTX 5060 machine with a 1200p screen. The G615LR-AS96 changes the whole balance with 12 GB graphics memory, 32 GB RAM and a 1600p display. Neither is automatically better value without the current prices and your intended workload.

The differences in one table

Graphics power figures include Dynamic Boost. They identify published limits, not sustained power measurements or a basis for calculating frame-rate differences. ASUS lists display output and Power Delivery for the USB-C ports shown above.

Choosing between the two RTX 5050 versions

The DS53 has the newer-named Core i5-14450HX, but only half the listed storage of the DS54. Both processors have ten cores and both configurations use an RTX 5050 with the same published graphics power ceiling. The CPU name alone is therefore a poor way to choose between the offers.

If you expect a large local game library, the DS54's 1 TB SSD may be the more useful starting point. If the DS53 is sufficiently cheaper, compare the cost and work involved in adding storage. Both models have two M.2 slots in total. Check the selected retailer configuration, since sellers can offer different capacities under similar titles.

When the RTX 5060 version earns its place

The AS74 changes both the processor and GPU while retaining a 1 TB SSD and a listed 1200p screen. Its Core i7 has 16 cores and 24 threads, which can matter for work beyond games. That makes it a candidate for someone using the laptop for demanding applications as well as gaming.

Its 16 GB RAM is supplied as two 8 GB modules. Budget for replacing those modules if you already need 32 GB. The value comparison should include that cost, rather than treating the AS74 as a factory 32 GB machine simply because it can be upgraded.

What the AS96 adds, and what it does not

The AS96 supplies 32 GB RAM and 12 GB graphics memory, alongside a higher-resolution screen. These are meaningful differences for memory-heavy applications, textures and GPU workloads. It also has two Thunderbolt 5 ports, which can be relevant to an ambitious external storage or display setup.

The SSD remains 1 TB, and ASUS lists the same 2.65 kg laptop weight across these four configurations. Spending more therefore does not buy more included storage or an easier commute. It also does not establish quiet operation or long battery endurance: Laptop Watch has not measured either.

Before comparing the checkout totals

Open the linked reviews for the configuration-specific cautions and Amazon links. Compare the complete model suffix, installed RAM and SSD, display, seller and return terms. Prices are deliberately not frozen into this table, so it will not present an old offer as a current bargain.
